KATE MOUNTFORD IMAGERY
My works are created to explore the surreal, ephemeral and the unseen reality that
lies just beyond our grasp. Our landscape provides an enormous scope for creation and
interpretation. Within each element of the earth lies a suggestion of emotion and narrative. Multiple forms, striking colors and abstract compositions all collate to reveal the inexpressible contingency we have with our natural world. Wrapped within a landscape, our emotional and spiritual connections to a space cannot be realized within true reality. Surrealistic imagery is used to combine both actual and ephemeral relationships and observations within the world we experience.
I am continually intrigued by opposites. The way a painter is given leave to create such expressive artwork made me feel restricted in the photographer’s sense. I choose to incorporate painting into my work through digital means to explore how a photograph can become two things at once. Seemingly realistic enough to clearly be a photography, while having the qualities of a painting.
The digitally rendered imagery juxtaposed with such a natural subject matter begs to be unfolded and scrutinized. Nature has been controlled by technology to express what a straight photograph never could. These elements combined portray the ironical and seriousness of our interactions with the natural world around us, and seeks to express ambiguous narratives for individual interpretation. Whilst being sumptuous to the eye and transient in expression, the work attempts to inflict a deep visceral and visual response within the viewer.
